“I was just trying to figure out the mathematical probability of happiness.” Its a very rich and extraordinary movie experience, indeed, when, while watching a film, you do an about face, a complete 180, in which you not only appreciate the life of an extraordinary man, but the work of an extraordinary director. This is what happened to me while watching The Theory of Everything. Early on, there are visual motifs that seem so heavy handed, I kept thinking Ok, ok, we get the point, but oh how I didnt. James Marsh honors science as science, that refreshing break from subjectivity thats been holding us hostage, in this country at least, for so many years, as a counterpart of the more mysterious theories of love and romance, perhaps no less calculable, but so far, at least, far from being calculated. This movie is so brilliant and so touching and clearly so true, that you couldnt fictionalize a life as improbable as Stephen Hawkings. This is not an eat your vegetables movie- its a sweeping romance, as any youve ever seen on screen, and if youre the type whos inclined to get teary eyed, this will be a watershed moment. Have tissues at the ready.
