I was just writing in my journal the other day and thinking about who I actually am and how I have changed over the 20 years of my life. I finally wrote a list of “who I am” for each year of my life and came up with a definition of myself for each year. (Hopefully no one is offended by #1. I was 14 months old at the time and still learning, so don’t judge me and no offense to anyone.) 0. A newborn colic baby with heart murmur. 1. An intelligent baby who could recite Tang Dynasty Poetry and, after going to the zoo, mistook an African American man for a monkey (oops!). 2. A Kindermusic student who was always reciting nursery rhymes and singing songs to her new baby brother. 3. A confident 3 year-old who sought to persuade everyone that she was actually 5. 4. A tinker bell ballerina and amateur figure skater that loved to play dress up. 5. An excited new owner of a gerbil named Sweetpea who always made sure to look both ways before crossing the street after attending safety town. 6. A nature girl who loved catching and playing with turtles, frogs, salamanders, and snakes, much to her mother’s dismay. 7. An old-fashioned girl who attended Little House on the Prairie Camp and enjoyed embroidery as she watched over her new baby sister. 8. A cute elementary school student who liked making friendship bracelets and knitting with her grandma. 9. A diligent Kumon student who went to school with a Thai Princess in Hong Kong and practiced her math skills while working for tips as a cashier at the Boulder Farmer’s Market and Colorado music festivals. 10. An awkward yet popular tomboy who put up the flag at school in the morning and received second place in the Michigan State Chinese Speech Competition. 11. An intelligent and sophisticated American girl studying in England who swam a mile a day and never failed to win when playing the laughing game. 12. A new girl trying to get used to life in China and trying to remember who she was while dealing with medical challenges. 13. An innocent and obedient girl who always stood up for what she believed in no matter what her classmates thought of her. 14. A high school freshman at Shanghai American School who perfected her singing and dancing skills when starring as a chorus member in the high school musical “Grease.” 15. A JV soccer player who found a passion in service as she helped provide earthquake relief in Sichuan by building homes there with Habitat for Humanity. 16. A dedicated teenager intent on making the world a better place as she cofounded a club that knit afghans for the people of Afghanistan, individually raised over 2,000 USD for World Hunger, helped build homes with Habitat for Humanity for the wonderful people of Bangladesh, and spent a week caring for orphans at the Starfish Foster Home in Xi’an. 17. An accomplished cellist and artist who continued to find happiness in serving others as she worked hard to get her IB diploma while simultaneously battling challenging medical conditions. 18. An unsure college freshman at Brigham Young University trying to figure out what to do with her life as she learned to do laundry over the telephone and experienced her first dates. 19. A college sophomore at BYU overly enthusiastic about working with cadavers in her anatomy lab and finally finding a sense of direction in life as she “partied” with her lovable roommates in Moon Apartments G8. 20. An excited young woman preparing to leave on an adventure of a lifetime to serve the Lord as a fulltime LDS missionary in the Brazil Natal Mission.
