I was listening Real Life, when I noted it had something John - TopicsExpress

I was listening Real Life, when I noted it had something John never repeated again in his subsequent works: that mellowy, fat and at the same time trebly guitar sound. It reminds me to Syd Barrett, Hank Marvin, The Velvet Underground or that Magazines contemporary band from Liverpool, Big In Japan (courtesy of Ian Broudie and Bill Drummond, in the latter case). In some Magazine early live shows, he played a Stratocaster model, instead his common Yamaha SG 1000. Another day i was playing the first notes from Burst with my Squier Vintage Modified Jazzmaster and it was OK, but when i did the same with my Ibanez AR420 (reissue of the 70s version, something like the Andy Partridges) it didnt replicate the real song. I guess the spaghetti western sound came form his Strat (or a Fender copy which appears in the Magazine bio book), as the other guitarists i mentiones used Fenders (except Drummond, who used a Gibson ES 330). The Light Pours Out Of Me is very influenced by the 60s and is one of the best solos i heard. I remember that style can be listened again in the solo from Castles In Spain (the pre-album version), with The Armoury Show. Wasnt his Yamaha more often used after Real Life?. He said he adquired at the time he got a record deal with Virgin in his Magazine era, 1977.
