I was on the first aircraft a C130 Hercules to arrive in Darwin - TopicsExpress

I was on the first aircraft a C130 Hercules to arrive in Darwin after the Cyclone. Myself and 2 Radio Trades from Air Transportable Telecommunications Unit flew into the RAAF Base at first light on the 26th to set up Comms with OPCOM. We flew around Darwin at fairly low level until they cleared the debris of the strip and were given the OK to land with a Very Pistol green flare. We were met by GPCAPT (Crazyhorse) Hitchins he advised me where to set up, and we had Comms back to OPCOM in about 1 1/2 hours. Would appreciate if any one took any photos of our aircraft at low level over Darwin (Pleeeeze contact me.) My involvement in Cyclone Tracy started at my Air Force home around Christmas Lunch time when I received a call from FLTLT Bob Holsken who had been advised that there was a problem in Darwin and they would need some generators, he required me to go into the unit to prepare some generators for Air Transportation. My family at the time was wife Beverley 35, Sherilynn 18, Steven 12, Larissa 6, Alison 3 (as I remember Sherilynn was not living at home) So I drove into work and commenced preparing the generators. Mid afternoon Bob called out from the Hangar Balcony to just prepare 2 x 10 KVA VWs and I would be leaving for Darwin at about 1900hrs. He was going to send someone to pick up my flyaway kit from home, I advised him I would like to get my car home and say goodbye to the family which he agreed with. We left that night and staged thru Townsville , where I was able to catch up with Peter McDonald and have a Chrissie drink with him, before taking off early morning, to enable us to reach Darwin by first light. The devastation and damage is still vivid in my memory. The rest of the unit was mobilised with the necessary equipment and I remained in Darwin till the 07JAN75. I returned to Darwin in 2001 (see NT News WED 25JUL2001 Page 16)and was amazed at the transformation. My partner Sandra and I were treated to lunch at the Sgts Mess and a tour of the base. We hope to get back to Darwin again one day. My thoughts are with you all on this 40th Commemoration. It was the finest achievement, in being able to help my fellow Ozzies out, in my 24 years of service. God bless and hope to see you on the 50th (I will be 85 then) and intend to make it. Merry Christmas to you all.
