I was on the west coast, still a couple hours before Id wake up. When I did, I watched speculation and doubt. The news wasnt like it is now. They looked for answers and took it seriously. Was it a bomb or small airplane? Possibly an accident. No one believed for a second that it was part of a bigger plan. In an instant, everything changed. On live TV I watched a commercial airplane crash into the second tower. It made the same impact as the first building, as if to remove any doubt that the first building was indeed also a commercial airplane and as if to remove any doubt that it was planned. For the next hour or so there was confusion. People who couldnt escape past the impact jumped to their deaths from the highest points of the buildings. Then it got worse. Both towers started to fall. Everyone watching both knew just what was happening and at the same time couldnt believe the outcome. The buildings werent evacuated. The police, firefighters, and volunteers who had gone into the buildings hadnt come out yet. The thing that struck the gravity of the situation for me is when it was announced that the city of New York ordered thousands of body bags. I know I wasnt the only person who spent the rest of the day glued to the TV, trying to make sense of what had happened.
