I was out on my regular (very) early morning dike tour this morning. Its so peaceful with the mist and sunrise. Its hard to reconcile with the threat it poses to the city. Watch out for deer, by the way. They have been forced into town by rising water. Met up with the crew who measure height and velocity of the River. The piece of equipment theyre getting ready to launch is an Acoustic Doppler Profiler. The head of the crew is from St. Francois Xavier and we chatted about his worries about home and family which are also threatened by the Assiniboine. Well have the official reading later this morning but by my marker (the roof of the picnic shelter) , the water seems a shade higher than last night. Well wait and see- could just be the current. Dikes look good, ran into a couple of workers just heading off-shift for a well earned sleep. Theyd been up all night keeping an eye out for trouble. Also passed a couple of Public Works crews checking on the pumps. It was barely 6 and the city was busy with folks doing what they do best: working hard to keep us safe and dry!
