I was probably too pessimistic about the possibility of another jazz film, re: my comments on Wills post below. Many of the jazz films, even those bordering on the hokie like Young Man with a Horn, have their excellent dramatic moments. The problems involve invoking the jazz milieu and more problematic, the nature of the music and music making. Perhaps it is the ineffable qualities of music that make it a difficult to make it comprehensible in a dramatic narrative. And it is not just jazz: the biopics of famous classical composers dont turn out so well, either. The best movie I have ever seen on the creation of music is Tous les Matins du Monde (All the Mornings in the World) about 17th Century French viola de gamba musicians and composers, starring Gerard Depardieu, directed by Alain Corneau. In jazz, the best film, the one that gets closest to the heart of the music, is Round Midnight, Bernard Taverniers film starring the jazz musician, Dexter Gordon, in the lead role. See the scene below: Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent. Victor Hugo. youtube/watch?v=gIYV5kIdK9Q
