I was reading a news post earlier. There is a nurse in Dallas who now tests positive for Ebola. Of course, the hospital is blaming the nurse. Lets look at the reality. One of these photos shows the isolation garb available in most hospitals. Yeah, its the thin, see through cloth one. The other garb is what workers who are caring for Ebola patients wear. Now, I am a nurse. Im not saying no hospital has the garb for Ebola, but it takes two people to outfit to go into an area where Ebola patients are being cared for. I have been looking at the cost of these Ebola outfits. The cheapest I find for the right outfit is roughly $8 EACH. Those little yellow gowns only cost a buck or two at the most. But, many times we as nurses have been griped at for the number of gowns we go through caring for an isolation patient. We have run out of gowns which means either you dont have gowns to garb in or you have to reuse your garb. As far as the gloves you see those wearing who are caring for Ebola patients, I have never seen a pair like that on any floor. The head garb, never seen it in any hospital. The little yellow gowns go to just below the knee. To care for a patient with Ebola, you have to have a garb that covers every part of your body, from the head to the souls of your feet. To care for a patient with Ebola, you are still going to have to change your complete outfit EVERY time you enter that room. You are looking at $10 or more each change. Do you really think a nurse is not going to be expected to limit themselves on the number of changes he or she is allowed to make? It has been said that any hospital is equipped to handle Ebola patients. I beg to differ. To blame the nurse is ridiculous. To blame any caregiver is ridiculous. Yes, Im sure protocol was broken somewhere. The only way to NOT break protocol is to not have any portion of your body uncovered. You need to duct tape your gloves to your sleeves. Have you ever tried to use duct tape by yourself to tape plastic to plastic? Yeah....It does not work very well. Please, pray for the nurse. That nurse is very possibly going to lose his or her life and if that does not happen, is almost certain to lose his or her job when recovered. Oh, it wont necessarily be because of the fact he or she caught Ebola, but the hospital will find a reason to terminate. The reason I am posting this is to bring attention to how unprepared we are to deal with this. Pray! Our biggest weapon is prayer. Our first line of defense is prayer. Pray! God is good. God is mighty. He is great. Prepare to batten down the hatches and stay at home if this keeps spreading. Make sure you have enough food in your home for at least 3-6 months. Make sure you have everything you need so you dont have to run to town in the event it does keep spreading. Joseph was told a famine was coming to the country. You are being warned to be ready. May the Lord be with you and keep you. This is not a call to panic. It is merely a call to get ready. May the Lord grant you wisdom and everything you need.
