I was reading something one of my sisters alerted me to on fb (thanks Tareeka Kelly). It was so refreshing to see someone wanting to do some ancestor work in light of the issues of injustice going on right now. However, it was also not surprising but also a little disheartening to read some of the ignorant responses to this post. Our people are so disconnected from who we were and ARE. We forgot how to call on our Ancestors, how to send them off properly, and how to honor them once they cross over. Some of us are afraid of them. Yet, these same people will call on Jesus Christ in times of devastation and want. Uh, people Jesus Christ is not God, he was a child of God and he is an ancestor. If its okay to call on Him then why not any others? We hide from being truly spiritual behind various scriptures but there werent scriptures and books in the ancient times. There was simply ritual. Are we now that detached from our Higher Selves that we can not fathom any connection to those who have passed on? One brother has even accused the person who originally posted the suggestion to do some ancestral work of trying to bring back the dead.......really? This person must get their ass kicked everyday and moment by their ancestors because they dont seem to realize that just because the flesh has ended its term on this planet or in this realm, the Spirit lives on...but I guess since that may not be written any so called Holy scripture its not valid. Trust and believe, read some books in fact, and you will see that our enslaved ancestors even called on their ancient ancestors in private, you will see that even ancient Europeans have built altars, it is a universal ritual to honor the deceased. Only in our African American communities is it looked down upon and sadly our ancestors were the originators along with Native American Indians to practice such traditions. Hopefully we can all teach one and reawaken the knowledge embedded deep in our DNA so we can harness our full, true, powers, that many fear us realizing, again. Peace and blessings.
