I was sifting through some old photos the other day and found one from 1988 of my best friend and me in my Clearwater Bay home, dressed in leotards. There mine was, in all its short-sleeved bright yellow glory, with a red fanny pack strapped proudly around the waist; me, smiling at my reflection in the mirror that ran the width of our living room because we were choreographing a dance to Kylie Minogue’s hot new single, “Locomotion” and I was loving it. The fact that I remember this as clearly as I do, may be attributed to the fact that we didn’t get much by way of pop star options during the course of my Hong Kong childhood, but Kylie joined Madonna, Whitney Houston, and Michael Jackson (and for whatever reason, Phil Collins) as icons of my early years.
