“I was sinking deep in sin, far from the peaceful shore, - TopicsExpress

“I was sinking deep in sin, far from the peaceful shore, very deeply stained within, sinking to rise no more; but the Master of the sea, heard my despairing cry, from the waters lifted me now safe am I. Love Lifted Me.” James Rowe “Love Lifted Me” For our Rock Grove worship experience the summer, I’ve dusted off my old Cokesbury hymnal. And as my summer preaching series focuses on the Sermons of John Wesley, our hymns are coming exclusively from our little brown Cokesbury book. Granted, it would have made a great deal of sense to primarily draw from the hymnody of Charles Wesley to match the preaching emphasis, but we do drink pretty deeply from that well on a regular basis here, and I know my folks love the old hymns they cherish so, so….Cokesbury it is for us this summer! And if you’re looking for a catchy tune, and an uplifting word, you could do a lot worse than James Rowe’s vibrant testimony to God’s love, mercy and grace, “Love Lifted Me.” And given my continual immersion into Wesley’s sermons this summer, this witness to a love that refuses to turn away from us in our sinful state, that doesn’t abandon us when we falter, that doesn’t turn a deaf ear to our desperate, drowning cries, is a witness that is consistent with Wesley’s understanding of God’s love and grace, and hopefully is consistent with my attempts at preaching. And maybe, just maybe, it’s a tune worth getting stuck in your head today. Peace! Pastor Randy
