I was so pumped to go canyoneering on the famous Subway Hike at Zion. We were a group of 8 and met up early morning to depart. It was my first time rappelling, and I had all the gear and technical know-how minus the actual experience. On the way to Utah, I discover that no one else in the group had been rappelling either, and they knew nothing about the equipment involved. I thought to myself, Its manageable; I can show everyone how to do it. It was to be a marvelous time with epic scenery and awesome action shots. Soon, we were facing our first cliff, and Ill never forget the look on everyones faces. It was a massive drop, and we couldnt even see the floor. We all looked at each other with hearts beating out of our chests and asked, Are we really supposed to do this? We didnt see any other way down except this one designated anchor on a tree growing sideways off the cliff. Luckily, we used our heads and ventured out to find another way around; this close call really put things into perspective for me because we almost decided to go for it; I decided to focus on safety for the rest of the trip. We swam through ice cold water, helped each other rappel down into the canyons, trekked for 10 miles, and finally exited the trail at 730pm where a park ranger was waiting for us. It was a scary experience, but the group really demonstrated resilience and courage in the face of all our challenges. Way to go team! Now that were all safe and sound, I can say it was super fun and such a good workout LOL. Who wants to join us for Part 2?!
