I was stuck in traffic this morning and out of nowhere thoughts of Richard Woods came to my mind. I clerked for him and became his partner at Merrill Lynch. Even as his partner, I could only refer to him as Mr. Woods... Anyhow, he was very intelligent -- but being a NYSE floor broker was not his perfect calling. However, nothing ever usually rattled this gentleman. Then one day in 1992, he had middle eastern guests on the floor for Merrill. He approached me sweating and exasperated. He then asked if I would take these guests. I did and then did not see him for hours. I was worried about him and asked if he was OK? He succinctly answered that he was fine, and asked if I knew where those evil men were from? I said no, and he told me that they were speaking Arabic and that these people would bring the largest problems that our future generations would know. I smiled wondering if Mr. Woods might be losing it... I now realize just how bright a man that Richard Woods was that day.
