I was talking to a budding songwriter client yesterday and we analyzed a few modern pop songs. I said, its a great place to start. Once you can master the mcdonalds hamburger, at least you know you can get a job. Hahahahah. People dont eat mcdonalds cause its great. They eat it because its everywhere, its cheap and its consistent. I saw the light bulb light up above her head. She proceeded to bang out her first pop tune. Well see what she brings me next week. Later in the day Eric Hanrahan and Noah Clark came into the studio to work on a punk influenced tune that has a bit of a random form. They are going for prog rock tune. I think they are avoiding the idea of writing pop songs. Another student Sam Zilli told me a few weeks ago, after a crash course in pop piano comping, that she was embarrassed to be writing exclusively pop tunes on the piano. Whats wrong w being commercial?, I asked her. If only she had this article to refer to. Pop doesnt have to mean shitty. I know some awesome pop songwriters and producers. Paul McCartney is pop after all. Hes my hero. That said, songs like Mr. Saxobeat kill it for the forks who actually love great pop music. Dear music industry, I dont want another blonde dancing queen model turned singer. Give me Adele. Give me Pink. Send the rest of these I posters packing, cause its making us dumber. Ps we are all part of the music industry if we are buying and making music. Stop leaving your musical decisions to clear channel.
