I was talking to a man who, in great discretion I will say, is in a position of extreme importance and honor professionally.(no hes not some self proclaimed Bishop) Our conversation, interestingly enough, was not about honor or entrepreneurial endeavors as was his history. Our conversation was about marriage and relationships. I was wise enough to say nothing. He made two points. 1. There comes a time where our personal values and character bubbles to the surface. It does not matter how many accolades you get or how much you achieve professionally, you come to a point where you choose to chase what you value most. You just cant serve two Masters. The man speaks my language. 2. Hes been married for over 30 yrs and in his observation and experience a successful marriage for that long will hit the toilet at least four times. He expounded that there were definite times you will ask yourself is it worth it? It is in those times that you realize the fairy tale is over and you power through the problems because you made a commitment. These were the wisest words necessary for me at the moment. I have learned that we all have different values. If youre all about you, then dont get married, because marriage IS NOT an ornament for your lifestyle. Marriage takes more than valuing it as a cool idea because were feeling each other. It takes persistence, perseverance, strength, courage, guts, commitment, humility, loyalty, prayer, patience, tenacity, and sanctification as it should be set aside as the MOST Holy alliance one shares with another human being on earth. Its not always pretty and happy and suits your romantic fancy. Its war, and if youre not willing to crawl through the sewers chin deep in shit with your partner from time to time to get your 30 yr plus, then marriage clearly is not for you. I will never fault anyone for their values, do what you do, but dont pretend to want something you dont possess the character, value, or endurance for because some of us are Real about it. Kenyon Martin had said dat 😆
