I was talking with an E.M.T. official in the know recently about the terrible 50 car & truck pile up on the Turnpike a few weeks ago that killed 3 people, and badly injured a State Trooper, ....when it was snowy, icy, and very windy with BADDD White Out conditions. I asked him WHY the Turnpike wasnt shut DOWN after the first 2 very bad accidents (and before the 3rd). He grimaced, with tears in his eyes, shaking his head sadly and said, Money. I was afraid that was the reason. ;( And VERY ANNNGRY about it!! RIDICULOUS!! ;( Even thought there was a Level 3 Snow Emergency declared in all the northern counties along Lake Erie here, (where NO one is supposed to be out, except essential personnel...police, ambulances, plows), ....WHYYY wasnt the TURNPIKE shut DOWN??! He told me that the Turnpike officials are very relunctant and resistant to shutting down, ...not only because of the inconvenience to hundreds of travelers, ...but because they miss out on all that REVENUE that comes in from all the hundreds and hundreds of cars and trucks. ;( Even though it is VERY hazardous driving conditions! He told me that an E.M.T. from Fremont that was helping out in one of the bad accidents during the white out conditions radioed in and yelled, SHUT THIS TURNpike down NOW!! >: [ But they didnt. : ( I KNOW that in the 11 yrs. that Dave and I have moved out here to the country, that they have shut the turnpike down twice, ...once because of a blizzard, ...and once because of near blizzard conditions, ...with terrible WHITE OUT driving conditions. It is just VERY SAD (and MADDENING!) that they didnt do it THIS time!! ;(
