I was thinking of Political Correctness this morning, particularly in terms of an argument to change the name of the Washington Football Team. Im unclear how its politically correct to change the name of a football team based on a word that is a dictionary defined slur. Thats not political correctness, thats common sense. Here is the irony based on a one of many comments about the issue using this line of thought: Good grief, I am so sick of this political correct thinking. The Native Americans need to get over it and stop being so sensitive! So lets break this down, shall we? This person complaining of political correctness is using the term Native American, a word born out of...uh oh...political correctness. Since first contact we have been called Indians that moved to American Indian and in the move of Political Correct politics, we have become Native Americans. But lets be real honest here, I am not a Native American, American Indian or even an Indian. I am a Paiute. I think Bobby Wilson said it best when he asked on The Daily Show segment: After every single thing American Indian people have been through, how can possibly say that we are thin skinned and oversensitive? Tell me the disadvantage to being mindful of other human beings, and then follow it up with how to justify using a word that is a dictionary defined slur is being too sensitive. If we were demanding true political correctness, we would require you to name each of the 566 federally recognized tribe each time you talk about us collectively.
