I was thinking this morning as I read the usual Facebook posts about the victimization of women, gays, overweight people, other minorities. Sometimes these bother me. Not because I get morally outraged, or feel guilty or even because i think they are whiners. No it is because inherent in these is a sense of entitlement or even revenge, usually against my strata, the empowered white male. The problem, aside from the obvious hypocrisy in wanting to bring another segment of the population down, is that whenever we generalize or stereotype we are making assumptions. For example I have been accused of being rich, snobby, and gay. I am and have never been in fact, any of those. Having lived in El Paso most of my life I have been subject to racist comments and behavior. I once applied for a position and was told by the individual that he did not want any pinche gabachos working with him. In short i know prejudice and discrimination. Now i know most people think this pales in comparison to the injustices suffered by minorities. My point is i do have empathy. I just do not see the utility in bemoaning a situation and assigning blame to another entire group for YOUR issues. If someone mistreats you, regardless if it is because they are a jerk or because of your race, creed, gender, color or religion, blame them not their race religion or color or what have you. As Mike Brady always said, When you point a finger at someone you are pointing four back at yourself.
