I was thrilled: The Dalai Lama delivered the invocation to the U.S. Senate last Thursday! As I searched for an appropriate image to illustrate this post, I noted that in almost all the images of the Dalai Lama, he is grinning, smiling or laughing. Although the TV news carried the event, it didnt bother to report what he said. But wow! just the same! Someone was breaking tradition and for once it wouldnt be some grim-faced, inflated Christian preacher of the usual ilk getting the job. In addition, the Dalai Lamas modest prayer was only three lines! Invited by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and greeted on the Senate floor by Sen. Mazie Hirono and Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the Dalai Lama prayed to Buddha and All, first in Tibetan, then in English, after which he characteristically chuckled over his less-than-perfect English pronunciation: With our thoughts we make our world. Our mind is central and precedes our deeds. Speak or act with a pure mind and happiness will follow you like a shadow that never leaves. Heres the kicker: Present were not even a dozen Democrats and even fewer Republicans on THIS HISTORIC OCCASION, and the opportunity to extend friendship to the worlds 7% of Buddhists. I know I speak for the ENTIRE SENATE FAMILY when I express our gratitude for that beautiful prayer, Reid pontificated lamely. WHO WOULD JESUS BLACKBALL?
