I was told about a lovely activity yesterday by Laura Sharples in the out of school club. She was talking to the children about bullying and the different types of bullying which children can experience. She then allowed the children to choose different types of creams and toothpastes out of a bag and laid a large piece of paper on the floor. She then asked the children to empty all of the contents of the cream and toothpaste onto the paper. Once the children had done this, she asked them to try and put the cream and toothpaste back into the tube/bottles. She was asking the children how easy it was. Which they all acknowledged was really hard. She then spoke to the children about mean words and how it was similar to things we say to people and how sometimes when we say nasty words to people and empty our anger on other people, it is very hard to take it back as people’s feelings are already hurt. This got the children thinking and helped them to think more about emotional bullying and considering other feelings before speaking. I thought it was a really powerful message delivered in a fun and age appropriate way and I am sure those messages will remain with the children involved.
