I was told again that the reason that rescues and adopters do not go to Long Island shelters to adopt, and prefer southern mixes, as all we have are pit bulls. My reaction? *Facepalm I then decided to make a poster of dogs that are brought up from our southern states and then get mislabeled in NY shelters. As a bully breed person and someone who believes the only thing that matters is a dogs core temperament, I personally think that what kind of dog a shelter mutt is happens to be irrelevant. Yet I love to eliminate erroneous excuses, so for those that continue to use this statement as an excuse, take a look at these dogs pulled off breeder websites and use it as a guide when visiting a shelter. I am adding a photo of an actual American Staffordshire Terrier, that we rescued with AKC paperwork, so you can see what a pit bull actually is supposed to look like. The genetic similarity of dogs may make it difficult for experts to visually identify a breed, and while mixed breed dogs are often labeled a pit bull if they have certain physical characteristics such as a square shaped head or bulky body type, visual identification of mixed breed dogs is not recommended. These guesses tend to be regionally based... a southern dog leaves Georgia as a cur mix, and then 9 months later ends up at a NY shelter labeled a pit.... If you honestly care about what breed your dog is... then get a DNA test. An Awesome dog is an awesome dog in my book, the rest is meaningless. I have to add... most dogs labeled pit bull in the shelter are NOT an American Pit Bull Terrier and it blows my mind that all of the different size and shaped dogs in our shelters get the same label. ALL little short hair dogs are chis, ALL white dogs fluffy dogs are poodle mixes, All short hair dogs with boxy heads are pits.... I could go on... but I hope I made my point. ADOPT A MIXED BREED DOG, BECAUSE AWESOME-MIX IS THE BEST BREED TO HAVE! -Meredith
