I was too young to remember but Rumi and my father reliably inform me that when she was five, my second sister Sravani would chew up every uniform tie along with her aam papad. She would also lose half her blouse buttons and leave her leather schoolbag under the trees on the way home reasoning that she could always pick it up on the way to school the next day. A bird relieved itself, she tried to wash the leather bag and it was never quite the same. She was the despair of her teachers, and her prim and proper elder sister was always asked why Sravani could not be a little more like her. And she had to be in on every conversation - my poor mother was at the neighbours house one day when she heard her daughter returning and tried to climb over the fence in her sari. Too late - Sravani caught her astride and demanded that she return to the neighbour and they repeat their entire conversation for her benefit. But she had a smile that could brighten up a gloomy Shimla afternoon and its lovely to be back there in the mountains with her and Rumi and see that smile dazzle the mall road again. Happy birthday Sravani Banerjee...
