I was up early this morning and began my morning reading as I do every day that is set by my TFA 52 week Bible reading plan. I was in I Corinthians 3-4 and I ran across this very powerful passagse about the division of the Corinthian church. I Corinthians 3 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. 2 I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; 3 for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men? 4 For when one says, “I am of Paul,” and another, “I am of Apollos,” are you not carnal? As the lead pastor of a GREAT church today I see a few nuggets in this small text that still apply to our lives in the church today... 1. Paul wanted to share the deeper things of God with his people, but couldnt because of their carnality, v. 1. 2. Paul loved them all enough to put himself in danger by pointed out that they were all acting very carnal, v. 2. 3. Where people gather onto sides of people this shows envy, strive, and division, vv. 2 & 4. 4.If change is ever going to come then the truth must be accepted about this behavior, v. 3. Then as I read down to verses 16 and 17I found Pauls answer to this destructive situation. I Corinthians 3:16 Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are. 1. The Church is Gods house, in which He dwells by His Holy Spirit, v. 16. 2. And if anyone works to divide, destroy, or defile it through their carnal works of division then God will destroy them, v. 17. So the simple lessons that I take away form this text for the Chruch today is that we all ought to love each other, be kind to one another, help one another, and NOT divide Gods Church over ANYTHING and if anyone dares to do so the rest of us can relax because God will take care of them very very soon.
