I was very much interested in science and engineering from the time I was around 8 years old. I especially liked sci-fi movies. There was a monster attack or a plague and a guy with a lab coat on who knew how to fix everything. He used science to help society. But in those movies, the scientist was typically a white or Asian guy, never a black man. I never saw anyone who looked like me, and I never saw a black teacher or professor in science. I didn’t see why I couldn’t fix things like they did. - Juan E.
