I was very saddened to learn last night of the death, in early March, of a school friend, Pardeep Sabherwal (or Subherwal as he was at school). In late January the family business, which Pardeep and his brothers had taken over from their father, and run successfully for over 30 years, closed, leading to personal bankruptcy orders against Pardeep and his brothers. I felt terribly sorry for them at the time - all of us who run businesses of any size know that things can so easily go wrong. Little more than a month after those events, Pardeep died, I understand from a heart attack. He must have been under unimaginable stress. He and his brothers had grown the Gino and NV fashion stores into a hitherto successful chain, and I know that at one point they had three factories working to supply them. The loss of the business that their father had started, plus everything that they had worked for and built, must have been awful for them. The last time I saw Pardeep was about 20 years ago, when I was involved in opening a charity clothes shop. He was generous with his advice and expertise. Im so sorry that Ill never bump into him again, but my abiding memory will be of the 18 year-old Pardeep who I knew; always smiling, a sharp sense of humour, and a pleasure to be around. I recall going into his dads shop to buy jeans when Pardeep was working there at weekends, and the obligatory banter and bartering that was involved. I have an address for Pardeeps widow Sunita, which I hope remains current. If anybody else from school would like to write to her, I can pass it on to you privately.
