I was watching a documentary on the history of hip hop last night...it reported that when gangster rap became popular with white kids their parents protested. What I thought was sad is that black parents didnt protest this music as well. Why did we(black people) accept this music without much resistance? NWA was not political....it was violent and misogynistic. Not to single NWA out because there were others...but my point is the music was harmful and black parents should have been just as upset as the whites. I know some will say they were only rapping about what they saw...I dont think there was a more oppressive time for black folk than slavery and I am sure our ancestors SAW many horrific events daily...but they SANG spirituals...they SANG about freedom...they SANG about equality....they created words to uplift our people not songs that swined and bathe in the filth.
