I was woken by whispers at the other end of the room this morning. I rolled over on the massive couch in Fearghal and Sarahs front room to see Fearghal pottering around the kitchen as silently as possible in order to not wake me! I said hello from the couch and we exchanged pleasantries. The next thing I know Sarah is in the kitchen and its two hours later than my chat with Fearghal. Its becomes a very lazy morning, Our hosts make pancakes for breakfast and myself, Nick and Jillian join them and they plan out their fishing expedition for the afternoon. I had arranged to meet Nick, a different Nick, who Id been chatting to on twitter since starting the race. He was caught up in the Tour of Southland, a seven day stage race which was ending in Invercargill today. I left the gang at the finish line as they headed off to catch their dinner and a little while later Nick wandered over from the cycle safety stand he was in the process of setting up ahead of the riders final few laps of Queens Park. I went for a drink with Nick and then wandered out to the finish line to catch the end of the race. Once the three four kilometre long laps of the finish area were done, a local teams rider crossed the line in first place. Once the dust had settled on the race I had to get back to the business of my own race. Id been offered a bed in Gore by Glennis a Couchsurfing host. Gore is just shy of half way to Dunedin, but very manageable even starting my day at four in the afternoon. The tailwind and flat terrain were the first appearance for either since leaving Melbourne and given the limited time before sunset. I made it to Gore around eight with almost an hour to spare before it started to get dark. Glennis greeted me with a lovely steak and chips when I got to her house. We chatted about my ride, her world travels amongst other things. Tomorrow is a pretty big day into Dunedin with almost 160 kilometres and some testing hills too. Im just praying for another south westerly wind which will help push me up the climbs.
