I was working at home today. Where I work, we promote humanism and human rights, secularism and freethought, and often this means criticising religious beliefs, practices and institutions, also Islamic states and their policies. Our style is certainly different to Charlie Hebdo, but the right to criticise ideas in connection with religion is essential. People are saying the gunmen stormed the offices of Charlie Hebdo, as if it was a war, as if they stormed the beach, or took a fortress. They didnt. They took kalashnikovs into a workplace. An office: where people have desks and diaries and deadlines, colleagues and friends. It wasnt a battle, it was a foregone conclusion, a slaughter committed by cowards. And I cant help it, this makes me a little bit afraid of my own office, makes it seem riskier, for the work we do. I was working at home today. I will damn well be seated at my desk in the office tomorrow.
