I wasnt going to do this again this year, but by request, here is my Top 5 concerts I attended in 2014, starting with Number 5 - The Muffs show at the Doug Fir Lounge in Portland on December 18th. After two great opening acts, The Muffs absolutely rocked a full house on a rainy Thursday evening and proved once again why they should be a million times more popular than they are. Catchy, poppy punk, 60s garage band energy with even some late 50s references, all of this bands songs could fit on any of their many album releases over the years. Their new songs sound like the old songs but are still somehow different and fresh and just as good as any songs that came before. They definitely have a formula, but somehow all of their new songs sound timeless and could have been recorded any time between 1994 and today. Kim Shattuck is as cool a rock star as youll ever find - Charismatic, self-deprecating, and ridiculously prolific while Roy McDonald is one of the best drummers I have ever seen, and a percussionist showman a la Johnny Johny Barbata (twirling sticks tossing sticks in air among other impressive histrionics). It was also pretty cool to catch a drum stick he tossed into the audience! My only regret is that I didnt record Sad Tomorrow because sadly I had my iPhone set on Photo instead of Video and only realized it half way through the song. Still, an exhilarating night of songs by a band I have loved for 20 years. Highlights included Lucky Guy, Sad Tomorrow, Saying Goodbye and I Need You.
