I watched, Boyhood, with James Rossi yesterday. Its an amazing piece of cinema that provokes a lot of reflection. I noticed a significant shift in my own viewing sensibilities. Just a few years ago I would have related with Mason Jr., the main character. Now I relate more to the parents in the film. True, the film brought back memories of my own youth. But when his parents talk with Mason, I wondered how I would handle similar situations and conversations. The film moved me on an even deeper level. As we watch Mason grow and change -- having the same actors age twelve years before our eyes is a narrative device whose power cannot be minimized -- I found myself thankful for my son. The years are flying by, but I am so excited, so grateful to get to watch this kid grow and change.
