I watched Chan-wook Parks OLDBOY for the first time last night. I dont know why it took me so long to see it. It came out in 2003 and my friends have been talking it up for the last ten years. I have to say, it was pretty great! Dark and grim, but great. One of the most brutal revenge tales Ive seen in a long time. Min-sik Choi is mesmerizing as Dae-su Oh--a man who finds himself imprisoned for 15 years without any sort of explanation. Once Dae-su Oh returns to the outside world, he is consumed by a need for revenge. And where the film goes from there is best left unsaid. Spike Lee currently put together an OLDBOY redo and while I have yet to see it, I have a hard time believing it could rival this shocking, unnerving, poetic movie. Whats in the box?
