I watched a documentary about the life and work of the late artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) last night. It brought back memories of NYC during the 1980s--some good, many bad. What has changed is than creativity is no longer desired or rewarded. Being different is now frowned on or rejected. Art, music and drama have become studio-created remakes of the same product over and over again. Basquiat, even though he got swallowed up by the fast life of the 80s, would not have made it at all today.
