I watched this for the first time yesterday and expected, from all - TopicsExpress

I watched this for the first time yesterday and expected, from all Id heard and read, to love it. But I didnt like it at all. I didnt like or admire or even laugh at any of the characters in any way. Of course, its impossible for Robin Williams not to bring some likability to whatever characters he plays, but his Armand has all the supine cowardice of early Niles Crane with none of the heart or humour. The son is a complete prick and, while Nathan Lane gives a great performance, his character Albert is so annoying that I just dont understand why the others - or anyone who watches this film - can bear to spend over fifteen minutes with him. Gene Hackman gives the funniest performance of the film, although his ultraconservative Republican senator has no redeeming and believable qualities. Hank Azarias Agador is every gay stereotype not already pandered to in Armand and Albert, and the whole thing just amounts to a gay minstrel show. Nope.
