I went out for a walk yesterday, in behind the house, in the trees. What a beautiful day to walk. My flowers, that did not do well in the summer heat, are sure strutting their stuff now. It is so pretty out front. But I went around the house into the trees and just strolled around, followed by my 2 cats. They love to walk with me. Such a woodsy smell out there, as the sun sifted down through the golden leaves, on to the fresh pine straw lying under them. The magnolia bloomed during the summer and I missed it, but from the number of brown seed pods lying on the ground under it, I bet it was pretty. The old oak has been struck by lightening and has died, and its branches are now littering underneath. A mess to deal with and and a faithful old tree to come down. Another, has fallen across the creek and is lying in its own dead branches. Sad. The last storm must have brought it down. Another mess to get up. But then I walked on, the cats following, and noticed the pines, how majestic they have become. They use to be so slim, and now they reach for the stars, and are as big around as 3 or 4 of me. When did they do all that growing? We have been here 40 plus years. They are getting old, like us, and I hadnt even noticed. And where are the spiders this year, that are always stretched out tree to tree with their webs, when I mow in October. I do not see a single one. Strange. I filled the bird bath back up with fresh water for the animals and birds, put an apple on the squirrel stand, and noted I have to go to the store for more birdseed, as I hear the birds calling down to me from the branches above. I enjoyed my stroll...such a beautiful day....quietness all around, except the crickets and cicadas, and a woodpecker hammering for bugs on a nearby tree. But there is also an underlying sadness in the air, a melancholy feeling, an imminent ending of things, for a while..... ADF Fall 2014
