I went to American Sniper last night and it rocked me pretty good. It wasnt just the ending but the subtler message that is often lost in this country and its almost mindless materialism and its fascination with criticizing the greates countryon this planet. Seth Rogen shit on the movie for being so patriotic it was akin to Nazism, Rogen is a Canadian, an actor and a complete idiot. The movie was imperfect and portrayed in typical Hollywood fashion: overly broad strokes, hyperbole and sentimentalism, but it delivered the message. it showed both sides of the issue from the liberal and conservative, family and warrior, etc. I knew the ending but it was beautifully portrayed and gut wrenching. Like every other audience reaction I have heard about it was dead silent at the end. As we left I heard a young girl waiting in line as we passed say, Look to see if the people are crying.... I was. It kind of annoyed me she would say that out loud, especially because she didnt know that my reason for crying was that my father had been killed in Vietnam when I was a kid and, like Chris Kyle and all those who put themselves in harms way, there is a cost to their families and a price paid by those great men that our society never fully appreciates or even acknowledges. I hope people seeing this movie understand how lucky they are that men like Chris Kyle do the brutal work they do so that we can have the safety to live in this materialistic society.
