I went to line dancing this evening and had an awesome time. It was lots of fun. Then I stopped at Paneras drive thru and got a Smoothie. I realized I needed gas and went to the gas station. This is when you could have knocked me over with a feather. Yes. As a teacher, it made me sad. I went to pay and told the cashier which pump I used. He said: Oh yes, ten dollars and twenty two cents. Here you go. I said: No. You have this wrong. I am suppose to pay you. I handed him eleven dollars. He stood there for a while and I explained that he needed to give me change. He said...Uh..I dont know ... and I said I get seventy eight cents back. He was such a sweet young fellow, probably still in High School. He had a great personality for customer service. I felt just awful for him. Its sad that this happened and makes me wonder how we as teachers can better help our students with basic math concepts. Something fell short because he did not learn the skills he needed to function in a job like this. Its great that they have computer registers that tell cashiers how much change to give. But, when the computers go down or there is a mistake like he made at first thinking he owed me money, it causes a problem for the cashier.
