I went to the LexTran hub on Vine street a couple of weeks ago to try to register new voters, and I had no idea what to expect. I got one person to sign up... to change his voting address. You might think that wasnt a very good return for two hours of my time. But I want you to know that I dont regret that time one bit - because I needed to experience something firsthand that I already knew, but dont think about nearly enough. Its this: people are just flat-out disgusted by politics. By the system. By the fact that our government doesnt usually work for them. And if you care about changing that system as much as I do, this is an important thing to remember. Most of the folks that were riding the buses that day didnt want anything to do with politics. Many laughed at me, while others said that they are convicted felons and have lost the right to vote. And one guy said, why would I vote for any of these candidates when they dont give a $#!+ about me? I didnt have a good answer ready, but this is what I wish Id said: why would these candidates give a $#!+ about you if you dont get involved? Because even good politicians have to worry about getting and staying elected if they want to change anything. So if we want anything about this system to change, we have to take part in it. Even if we dont love it. What might happen if we all voted, and told our representatives how we felt about the issues? Wouldnt they have to listen then? So I hope you will vote on November 4th. And I hope you will consider doing just a little more as well. A great place to start is by joining over 8600 members of Kentuckians for the Commonwealth.
