I went to work out and on my way home I decided to go pick up some - TopicsExpress

I went to work out and on my way home I decided to go pick up some tofu from the local grocery store. I wanted to make something that my vegetarian daughter could eat for lunch or dinner tomorrow. I was also going to get myself a beer or bottle of wine. In front of the store this lady, a little older then me maybe, was asking people for change. Unfortunately not an uncommon sight. She looked haggard and thin. This couple that had just gotten out of this huge SUV laughed at the lady and walked right into the store. She only asked me for some change. I took her into the store and bought her something to eat and drink then I gave her $3. I told her good luck and I hope that her fortune changes. The couple that walked into the store before me said that it was dumb and that the lady was probably a drug addict or just a hustler. I just shrugged my shoulders and kept walking. What I want to get at is what if she was? What if she is a drug addict or even just a hustler? I dont know this lady or her situation, but so what? Whats wrong with just giving people the benefit of the doubt? What if she is just down on her luck and really does just need a hand? For those of you who go to church, synagogue or mosque, you are asked to give tithing. This a percentage of what you make that is to be used for charity to help the poor and the needy. For those of you who are not religious, there is something that W.E.B. DuBois said about the talented 10th. Those that are fortunate enough to do better have an obligation to be better That starts off by helping those who are less fortunate then you are. To lend a hand and uplift those who need it, by whatever manner we can. I missed out on my glass of wine tonight, but I helped someone by showing them a simple kindness. Im not even close to being well to do, but I can afford a roof over my head and support my family and still have a little left over. Not much, but enough that if I give someone a few bucks, I want suffer. Kindness is not weakness. Generosity is not foolishness.
