I went up against Hollywood royalty today and did ok. The Dyslexia Association of Ireland this morning hosted a viewing of The Big picture a film about Dyslexia by James Redford, son of Robert. There was a little known, (in Ireland at least) Irish film about Dyslexia on the same bill entitled left from write Left from write got a 5 min promo slot before the Big Picture. I am grateful to the Dyslexia Association of Ireland for giving left from write an opportunity to get onto a big screen, at the beautiful Lighthouse Cinema. Rosie Bisset of the Dyslexia Association gave left from write a lovely introduction and recommended people to check it out on You tube. Perhaps though the order of the films should have been reversed, with the Sundance kids kids movie playing second fiddle to our own, home grown film. Yes the production values of left from write (a no budget film), are probably slightly dodgy here and there but I think they spent a few more million on their film. Also Redfords contact list is probably better than mine. He interviewed a number of high profile people like Richard Branson, who only recently figured out the difference between Net profit and Gross profit, a fact mentioned in both films. But if they got Richard Branson, we got Mrs Brown. Brendan O Carroll is Dyslexic and doubted his own intelligence in school, but got great support from his mother. Brendan it turns out, is Mensa standard smart... and what does he do with it ? He dresses up as an old woman, and pulls in 12 million viewers on the BBC. Clearly he is smart. I am very grateful to Brendan and all the other experts and extraordinary people who took part in my film. Even if I do say so myself left from write bears comparison with young Redford’s excellent film. left from write has received 87,000 views on You Tube and counting. Viewers have left mostly positive comments, although somebody thought the presenter was unsuitable, as he was not cleanly shaven and I think he had a problem with the hair too......... and after all the effort I put in. A number of individuals and groups from around the world have asked for my permission to use left from write as an educational tool. I am happy to do that. But here in Ireland i am still waiting to hear something from the Department of education, teachers as well as students need to hear the message in left from write I got a headmaster to view it. His only comment was that it was a bit negative. Well you try going through our education system as a Dyslexic, come out the other end and tell us your jolly tale. Unfortunately as far as the education system and Dyslexia is concerned, it is a negative story. It shouldnt be. Nothing much has changed since I was in school. The only way things will change is if Dyslexic people get together to demand our rights. Dyslexics of Ireland untie.
