I will Make Okyenehene More Powerful Than Otumfuo - Akufo-Addo ___________________________________________________________________________ It was all joy in Akropong in the Easter Region last week, where Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo finally let the cat out of the bag with regard to his hatred for the people of Ashanti. Wearing his rich Kente Cloth to join the Omanhene and the people of Akropong for the celebration of the Odwira festival, Nana Akufo-Addo as usual pleased his immediate listeners by making another unguarded tribal statement similar to his infamous All die be die. This time around and in the same home region, Eastern, Akufo-Addo implored the chiefs to assist in his presidential bid. As their reward, Akufo-Addo vowed to make Okyehene more powerful than Otumfuo, and that most of the chiefs in the region would be given much recognition at the presidency. For many Ashantis, Akufo-Addos statement, though unhealthy, is not surprising at all. This is because Akufo-Addo has disrespected Otumfuo in several ways. For instance, after being handed the flag-bearership position of the NPP in 2007, Akufo-Addo paid a courtesy call on Asantehene to inform him of his new position, and to ask for his blessings. However, whilst all the dignitaries who shook hands with Otumfuo bent down to show some respect for the Golden Stool, Akufo-Addo stood stiff and raised his shoulders as if he had already taken over from J.A. Kufuor as the president. This action infuriated all the Kings subjects who had gathered there, prompting one of then to ask; Since when did Akufo-Addo grow horns? It would be recalled that Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, summoned some 2012 Presidential Aspirants including Akufo-Addo and John Mahama to sign a Peace Accord at KNUST. Whilst John Mahama assured the King that he would gracefully accept the verdict, Akufo-Addo gave some conditions before he could accept the verdict. This, to many, was serious indictment on the dignity and authority of the occupant of the Golden Stool. Again, Akufo-Addos silence on the bribery allegations against Otumfuo with regard to the Supreme Court case was another attempt to undermine the integrity of the King. Unfortunately, Akufo-Addo has managed to fool some Asantes to verbally abuse their King, and wish him dead in far away South Africa. Thus, for the first time in Asante history, Otumfuo shed some tears, and uncharacteristically left his detractors in the hands of the gods. In fact, Asantes are at a loss as to why Akufo-Addo wants to touch the Golden Stool which has been a symbol of their power, unity, and soul. For, throughout Akufo-Addos electoral defeats, the people of Ashanti Region have given not less than 70% of the total valid votes in the region as against 56% in his own home region. Yet, Akufo-Addo does not have the courtesy to appreciate their efforts and respect them. For instance, after allowing his supporters to denigrate former president Kufuor, it took Akufo-Addo six (6) years to announce that Kufuor assisted him financially in all his presidential bids. How could such insults be taken back? This is the more reason why the people of Asanteman should open their eyes and watch Akufo-Addo closely. The man does not have the interest of Asantes at heart. The kind of disrespect shown to the two most powerful men in the Kingdom, Otumfuo and former president Kufuor, is strong enough for the people of Asanteman to reject him at the upcoming NPP Congress before the man causes havoc to the party. The former Trade Minister made subtle references to the ambitions of his main opponent Nana Akufo-Addo who is attempting for the third time to become president of Ghana. “When people want to contest for positions, I think what voters need to do is to find out what their record is. We have to separate ambition from ability and the fact that you want to be President. We all have ambitions but the issue is not about your ambition, it is about your capacity and your ability and that ability must be based on your record,” Alan said. Alan Kyeremanten believes he has a “clear” track record both in Ghana and around the world to merit the votes of the delegates. Mr. Kyeremanteng who was nominated by the African Union to contest to head the World Trade Organization said: “I cannot talk about others but at least in all humility my record is clear. Whether it is in Ghana, or whether is in Africa or internationally” The NPP will hold its congress on Saturday, October 18, 2014 to select the flagbearer to lead the party in the 2016 elections. The aspirants contesting for the flagbear slot are Nana Akufo Addo, Alan Kyeremanten, and Francis Addai Nimoh. Addressing a meeting of delegates ahead of Saturday’s Congress, Alan Kyeremanten promised transforming Ghana if he gets the support of the NPP and by extension the larger Ghanaian electorate. He stressed that the campaign is not about his personal ambition but the NPP saying “this campaign is about the NPP is not about Alan wanting to be a President. It is not a personal ambition. This campaign is not about me, it is about Ghana.” He further stated that Ghanaians are looking for that type of leader who will provide the “visionary and bold leadership” that will transform Ghana. Alan Kyeremanten in a bid to win the hearts of party delegates in the Volta Region, earlier promised bicycles and other goodies if they elect him as flagbearer at the party’s impending congress on October 18. “This time, if you make Alan your flagbearer, I will ensure that every executive, from polling station to coordinator to constituency will have the means of transport either bicycle or motorbike.” “Your bicycle will be registered in your personal name so that even when you are not an executive you can take it home as your reward for working for the party,”he said.
