I will give you the details of what I DO know about this beautiful brooch and I hope someone can help me with what I dont know! This is a genuine amethyst in an early 20th century cut. The clasp is marked 14K. The Lewy Brothers Company of Chicago was in business from 1897 until 1925 when they filed bankruptcy. A quick but fascinating side note here: Ervin Lewy ( one of 3 brothers who established the company) was one of the victims of the Titanic sinking. He was returning home from a diamond buying trip when the ship went down. They have never found the diamonds that were in the captains safe. The jeweler that I took this to was unsure of the metal of the body of the brooch. As delicate as it is he was unwilling to subject it to any testing. Could the coloration of it simply be patina? There is a stylized Y with a ball above it on the clasp as well. Does anyone recognize that mark as a maker? Thanks so much for any info you can share with me.
