I will not be so arrogant as to speak in absolutes concerning the Michael Brown case but from a criminal justice standpoint there are a few things I find puzzling. Why was this policeman allowed to go home and wash his bloody hands without first having them checked for evidence, why did the first officer on the scene interview the policeman without taking notes, and why did this policeman not turn in his weapon immediately after this shooting? All of these things are in direct contrast to standard operating police procedure. The facts are not as clear cut as everyone thinks and at the very least demands further investigation. A grand jury is only presented information deemed fit by the prosecutors office and is not a court trial where two opposing sides present their case. The poor handling of this grand jury coupled with the public ineptitude of the DAs office warrants a second look. I am not naive to say the Brown was always an outstanding citizen but that does not automatically absolve the actions of this police officer if he in fact committed any wrong doing. Also, rolling your eyes and saying that race has nothing to do with this situation makes you an ignorant person blind to the fact that tense race relations create situations like this. Also, although i do not agree with destructive riots and looting, i can understand why people act this way when they feel there isnt any other option in a society that is programmed to condemn minorities from low socio economic communities. This is not a political issue like so many of you are making it out to be. This is definitely not about Browns past. This is about the specific moment that led up to his death. I am on the side of the truth which is still in my opinion yet to be found. The only thing I can say with certainty is that this policemans actions following this incident are suspect. I would not be surprised if this case resurfaces in civil court perhaps even in federal court. Ask yourself a question? Whose side were you instantly on at the moment you heard a white cop shot a black teenager? Did you know before all the facts were revealed or did those facts already corroborate the opinion you already formed? Thats what really needs to be addressed before anything else.
