I wish Narendra Modi remains confined to the development agenda. India badly needs clear vision and strong governance, not necessarily perfect governance. That, in any case, is a far dream. But among the choices available, he is the best bet in the current situation. With regard to his statement on ABP channel that many of his Jain friends are in the profession (of running slaughter houses), I feel sad and badly hurt. He didnt give specific name, thus making the entire community vulnerable to harsh and unjust public ridicule - Jain dharm aur ye karm. The angle here is gross generalization and to use one wrong to justify another wrong and something basically wrong. He needed to implicate Jains because Jains are the other extreme on the scale of violence. Now everybody has been clubbed together and labeled as killers and butchers like owners of slaughter houses, including Hindus. It is each Jains responsibility to ensure that the entire community doesnt get a bad name due to the conduct of an individual. It is for the world to ensure that it preserves this rare and one of its kind religion presumably consisting of living role models of non-violence and non-absolutism, abstinence, self-control and neutral thinking - despite the exceptions. Jains have been an integral and essential part of the Indian culture and brought necessary diversity that ensures balance from extreme behavior - a force, counter-force kind of situation in this bi-polar world, without ever using aggression as a tool. Today, this religion is on the verge of extinction as compared to a glorious past. India would not be better of if Jains are eliminated from the scene. Unfortunately, somewhere narrow mindedness is fast engulfing the Indian society where contrary and dissenting voices are being suppressed. The vast majority is also confused due to the policy of appeasement followed by the political parties. Among the majority also, the caste system based reservation is being used to gratify few and deprive others for an unduly long period of time. Even Narendra Modi, despite his boldness, cannot do away with reservations. This is the bad side. On the good side, he cannot do a lot of other things that his so called loyal supporters are propagating through hate campaign in complete disregard to ground realities and humanitarian considerations. NaMo cannot afford another Godhra. He must focus only on development, and I hope he does. Sanity must prevail. Merit, impartial judgment, values, empathy - where are you all headed? Please dont go. I have some nice friends around who reinstate the faith that goodness shall prevail and last.
