I wish to bring up a topic that appears to be causing issues in this group . The roles, responsibilities and costs of veterinary professionals . We need to remember that Veterinary surgeons are not running a charity . These people spend over 5 years studying how to diagnose illness , medically treat our much loved babies in emergency and crisis situations , perform surgery, give us advise as to the well being of our pets and deal with idiot customers and remain professional. They can mend broken legs , and in turn, our broken hearts when our pets are seriously injured . They are there for us at any hour . They are a life line we need when our pets require medical intervention . All this comes at a cost . Vets are not a charity , and need to cover the costs of operating a business , just like any other business .... The cost price of medications is high . They need to pay rent on their premises . Pay their staff , pay insurances , have all the necessary equipment to allow them to treat our pets . Ultrasound machines, x~Ray machines , surgical tables and equipment , autoclaves , oxygen tanks , sutures , bandages and the correct medications for thousands of ailments . This all comes at a price Veterinary practices are not required to hold stray animals . Its not what they do ....... Any vet will assist a critically injured stray , and will do so to alleviate their suffering, but injured does not cover a dog you find in the rain at 2am, and who you think has a slight limp and you have no where else to take . The matter of emergency overnight housing is a council issue , and not that of the closest 24 hr vet . As it stands , CLFI are doing the best we can to bridge the gap that council have left with regards to over night housing of strays in the Campbelltown area . Please remember , That vets are here to treat our pets , not be abused because they dont have the facilities to hold a stay animal out of council pound hours . Did you ever consider that every available space, kennel and cage are full with car accident victims , diabetic pets who have gone into hypoglycaemic shock , swallowed snail bait or has an intestinal obstruction after swallowing a corn cob ? In after hours situations, its usually 1 vet and 1 nurse trying to treat all these emergencies at once . Please remember this next time you are told by a vet that they cant house the dog you just found waking down the street at 2am Thanks Snr Admin
