I witnessed, and was first responding to - a bike accident on 50th, near Xerxes Ave., S. this morning. Was driving behind her - she was biking slightly downhill, at the intersection, and was trying to stuff something into her back, bike-pant pocket. Gee, thats something Id *never* do. I thought - and as I was thinking it, either she hit something, or she got destabilized, and she flew over the bars and smacked her head on the ground. I pulled aside & parked - and saw only her downed bike in my rearview mirror. Grabbed my phone, because I *knew* Id need it - and got out of the car. She was at the side of the road, moaning and rolling from side to side; coming to - the side of her face and head was bloody, and she was in a small pool of blood that was running into the gutter. Thank G*d she was wearing a helmet. I told her to stay down, and still; meanwhile, dialed 911 like it was a verb. By this time there were others to help - so I could stay on the line with 911 and provide details. Firetruck arrived in 1/2 minute, flat. Ambulance in a little under 2. Her iPhone had landed a foot from her - corner of the case cracked off. She asked for it, and was able to dial her husband. (Which was good to hear). I know Ive met her before - at the U, on the West Bank. She was getting annoyed by all the questions emergency personnel were asking her (because this was a head injury; they had to). I think she may also have broken her elbow/arm.
