I witnessed the end of an era tonight when i saw the Hobbit: Battle of the five armies. I remember when i was first introduced to the story as a little kid by my mom and grandparents in both a story book and the original animated movie. Smaug was the very reason i fell in love with dragons in the first place with his impressive monologues and his imposing presence. Because of Tolkiens tales my love for fantasy and adventure blossomed. Then Peter Jacksons film adaptation of the Lord of The Rings was released and with each installment i became ever more excited for its conclusion. Its ending is still the most emotional and bittersweet moment i have ever seen in a story. Tolkiens tales inspired me to write my own fables of heroism and triumph over monsters of evil and darkness. But it also taught me about the value of our ordinary lives and how our day to day moments are far more precious than any gold. Here as one last effort into middle earth Peter Jackson decided to bring the story full circle with the hobbit and its ending certainly rivaled the bittersweet emotion of the ending of the lord of the rings. But it was for more than just the end of the story, it was also that i would never see these same people play the same characters ever again because their story was done. Tolkiens books have brought wonder to people everywhere and Peter Jacksons movies also helped spread the message far and wide. Some may criticize the movies but i find the message in them was conveyed more than adequately. I thank Howard Shore for a musical score that is among the greatest series of pieces mankind will ever produce. I thank Peter for his rendition of Tolkiens greatest gift to humankind. I thank all of the actors who brought these amazing characters to life for so many years. But most of all i thank J.R.R. Tolkien for creating a world so far beyond our wildest imaginings, while also being unafraid to show the beauty of real ordinary and peaceful life. To say that even without dragons, or wizards, or orcs, or balrogs, our lives can still be just as epic as his colossal tales of swords and sorcery. Truly he is and will always be my favorite author of all time.
