I woke up at 5 this morning to the news that 18-year old #vonderrickmyers had been shot 16 times by St. Lois police. This was after I found out that a sista from Detroit had been killed by a man when she refused to accept his advances. I have yet to find the strength to read about her death pass the headlines that have come across my timeline. Its with these two events that both my heart is heavy and I further understand the comments Raven Symone made about race. Obviously I dont agree. But maybe she was thinking, if I just renounce this hyphenated identity, something like half citizenship, then maybe Id be treated like a life worthy of police defense. Like an American. After all no one says White-American. Its just White. There Americaness is assumed. But then, still standing at this crazy intersection, its as if my Black woman self, her Black woman self, is just waiting to be hit. My Blackness renders me a shooting target for the police and my womanness makes me a target towards the very ppl I stand with and fight against the police. I absolutely hate to ask this question, but exactly who is the power I should be fighting?
