I wonder how people who take their own mystical experiences at face value would respond to the mystical experiences of others that have yielded conclusions they dont believe in. How do you assess something like that if youve already allowed that some beliefs can be justified without, or even contrary to, conscious reasoning? I listened to a story today from NPRs Snap Judgment about a man who participated in a ceremony invoking the help of Shiva just to humor his Hindu father-in-law and believes that the subsequent chain of events that led to the correction of his serious medical condition must have been a result of that ceremony. He said things about the ceremony and the following events that I often hear from people explaining their religious beliefs: There is just no other explanation for this. You can be skeptical if you want, but I know without any doubt that it was an encounter with [supernatural entity]. What do you make of something like that if youve had mystical experiences of your own that have led you to a contrary conclusion - say, that there is no god but the Abrahamic God?
