I work often on plyometric training in the gym. Plyometric training enhances the elastic energy component of movement, which is one of the most important factors for moving efficiently with speed. Of course postural form / mobility / stability-motor control are initial factors to be developed, however many athletes disregard true power (plyometric) training and focus more on the strength and load bearing components. Strength training is essential for correct load bearing / absorption and the ability to produce force through a movement, BUT if you cant produce force quickly, your missing out on the complete picture. From marathon runners to track sprinters and every athlete in between, they all need efficient elastic ability to absorb load fast and react quickly off the ground. The result is an athlete that moves powerfully with little effort, delays fatigue, and has a smaller chance of load bearing type injuries...
