I would like to make a plea for a return to civil, constructive political discourse, where left, right or middle we all act like we are on the same team, working together for the same win...we only disagree on coaching staff! I would like to start, by first apologizing to friends & family that call themselves liberals and second to promise: no more name calling! Heres the story: My cousin & his wife have 2-3 year old (that age where they can talk but sometimes you need to interpret for them) and they asked me to babysit when her parents left abruptly in the middle of their vacation/visit...I wasnt told why. So Im reading the paper or facebook posts while hes fidgeting with a rubber band, when he asks, Uncle Tom, would you please get my toy down for me? Some stinky, unwashed brillers put it up where I cant reach it. This sounded way to familiar for me to be comfortable with the direction it was taking, but I knew I needed to be the interpreter so I asked, by brillers do you mean liberals? And in a sweetly innocent voice, with the second syllable higher than the first he said, in the affirmative, uh huh! So I closed my eyes (as if that would help) and asked, OK, what stinky, unwashed liberals put your toy up on the shelf? Same voice, Nana & Papa! So I gulped back my fear & asked, Can you tell me what happened, please? And he said, Well, Mommy & Daddy were both at work so I was watching TV with Nana & Papa when a commercial came on for that Obamacare stuff you always talk about. So I asked them, Do you guys know about this Obama man? and they told me, Yes! We both voted for him twice!, and I told them, Thats funny, Uncle Tom asked the neighbor yesterday, What kind of stinky, unwashed liberals vote for Obama?!...Twice!!?...and they got up & turned off the TV, then they put my toy on the shelf & called Mommy at work. Then they went upstairs & packed and when Mommy got here, they left. Now in my defense, I am Positive that I said smelly not stinky, but either way I apologize and sincerely Did Not Mean It! All of my liberal friends and family members are very sweet smelling!...and as far as I know, have as good or better personal hygiene as Anyone! And even in the context of joking with redneck conservative next door, it was uncalled for and I vow to speak better in the future. You Never know what they will hear or repeat!
